General Tab: Uploads

The Uploads settings in Ultimate Member allow you to manage user upload options and optimize photos for your site.

Change Image Orientation

  • This setting refers to the Exchangeable Image File Format (EXIF) data embedded in images captured by digital cameras and smartphones. EXIF data includes information such as the camera model, date and time the photo was taken, and crucially, the orientation of the camera when the photo was taken.
  • Enabling this setting allows Ultimate Member to read the orientation information from the EXIF data of an uploaded image. For example, if a user uploads a photo that was taken in portrait orientation (vertically), but the camera was held sideways, the image may appear sideways or upside down. By enabling this setting, Ultimate Member can automatically rotate the image based on the camera's orientation when it is taken, ensuring that the image displays correctly on your site.

Image Quality

  • This setting refers to the level of compression applied to images uploaded to your website.
    • A quality setting of 0 indicates the lowest quality and the highest compression, resulting in a smaller file size but potentially reduced image clarity and detail.
    • A quality setting of 100 indicates the highest quality and the least compression, resulting in a larger file size but with better image clarity and detail.
    • The default range in Ultimate Member is set to 60, which offers a balance between image quality and file size. You can adjust this setting based on your preferences and requirements for image quality and website performance.

Image Upload Maximum Width (px)

  • This setting specifies the maximum width, in pixels, that an image can have when uploaded to your website.
If an image is uploaded with a width greater than this specified maximum, Ultimate Member will automatically resize the image to fit within this limit. For example, if you set the maximum width to 1000 pixels and a user uploads an image that is 1200 pixels wide, Ultimate Member will resize the image to 1000 pixels wide while maintaining the original aspect ratio.

Profile Photo

The Profile Photo settings in Ultimate Member allow you to manage the size and appearance of user profile photos on your website.

Profile Photo Maximum File Size (bytes)

  • This setting defines the maximum allowable file size, in bytes, for profile photos uploaded to your website. Setting it to 999999999 effectively means that there is no enforced limit on the file size, allowing users to upload profile photos of any size.

Profile Photo Thumbnail Sizes (px)

  • This setting allows you to specify the sizes, in pixels, for the thumbnails that will be automatically generated for each profile photo upload. In this case, the default options are 40 pixels, 80 pixels, and 190 pixels.

  • Additionally, there is a "Remove" button next to each size option, which likely allows you to remove that specific thumbnail size if you no longer want it to be generated. There is also an option to "Add New Size" button, which suggests that you can customize the thumbnail sizes further or add additional sizes as needed.

Cover Photo

The Cover Photo settings enable you to manage the size and appearance of user cover photos on your website.

Cover Photo Maximum File Size (bytes)

This setting defines the maximum allowable file size, in bytes, for cover photos uploaded to your website. Setting it to 999999999 effectively means that there is no enforced limit on the file size, allowing users to upload cover photos of any size.

Cover Photo Minimum Width (px)

This setting specifies the minimum width, in pixels, that a cover photo must have when uploaded to your website. Any cover photo uploaded with a width less than this specified minimum will likely be rejected or resized to meet this requirement. In this case, the minimum width is set to default 1000 pixels, meaning that any cover photo uploaded must be at least 1000 pixels wide.

Cover Photo Thumbnail Sizes (px)

By default, the plugin creates two thumbnails when a user uploads a cover photo (300px and 600px). These are used to improve the performance of the plugin by serving the thumbnails instead of the original image. This option allows you to change the size of the thumbnails or remove a thumbnail from being created.
