Access Tab: Restriction Content

The Restriction Content settings provide options for controlling access to your site's content. By default, Ultimate Member grants everyone access to your site. Unless you modify the access settings for specific pages or posts, all content will be visible to all visitors. This option is ideal if you want non-members to be able to view your site's content but also wish to restrict certain pages to members only.

Alternatively, you can restrict access to the entire site, making it accessible only to logged-in users. This means that every page or post will be visible only to users who are logged in unless you adjust the access settings for individual pages or posts to make them available to everyone.

When using this option, it's important to provide a way for non-members to sign up or log in to your site. For instance, you might consider using your homepage as a landing page to encourage new users to register.

Warning:  Pages such as Login, Registration, and Password Reset cannot be restricted and will always be accessible to all users. These pages are exceptions to the access restrictions.

The settings below allow you to restrict access to content on your site, providing a flexible way to manage who can view specific posts, pages, or media items. To configure this setting, go to wp-admin> Ultimate Member> Settings> Access Tab> Restriction Content.

Global Site Access

This setting allows you to control the overall access to your site. By choosing one of these options below, you can globally control who can access your site. Additionally, you can set separate restrictions for individual posts or pages by editing the specific item.

  • Site accessible to Everyone: This means that all visitors, whether they are logged in or not, can access your site and view its content without any restrictions.

  • Site accessible to logged-in users: This option restricts access to your site so that only users who are logged in can view its content. Visitors who are not logged in will be prompted to log in or register. If this option is selected, the following settings below become available:
    • Custom Redirect URL: This setting determines the URL to which a user who is not logged in will be redirected if they attempt to access a part of your site that they do not have permission to view or access. It allows you to control the user experience for unauthorized visitors by directing them to a specific page or URL, such as a login page or a custom message explaining why they cannot access the content.
    • Exclude the following URLs - Add New URL: This setting allows you to specify URLs that will be excluded from the restriction applied by the Custom Redirect URL setting.

Example: If you have set a Custom Redirect URL for unauthorized users, but you want to allow access to certain URLs without redirection (e.g., a specific landing page or a contact form), you can add those URLs to the exclusion list. This means that if a user tries to access those excluded URLs without permission, they will not be redirected and will be able to view the content normally.
    • Allow Homepage to be accessible: If enabled, the homepage will be accessible to everyone, regardless of whether they are logged in or not. This means that even users who are not logged in will be able to view the homepage of your site.
    • Allow Category pages to be accessible: If enabled, category pages will be accessible to everyone, regardless of whether they are logged in or not. This means that even users who are not logged in will be able to view category pages.

Restricted Post Title

This setting allows you to specify a replacement title for posts that are restricted and cannot be viewed by certain users. If this setting is enabled, the option below becomes available:

  • Restricted Access Post Title: This setting allows you to specify a replacement title for posts, pages, or custom post types that are restricted and cannot be viewed by certain users

For example, if a user does not have permission to view a particular post, instead of displaying the original title of the post, you can choose to display a different title that indicates the post is restricted. This feature helps to maintain consistency and clarity in your website's content presentation for users who do not have permission to access certain posts.

Restricted Access Message

This setting allows you to customize a message that will be displayed to users who do not have permission to view certain content on your website.

For example, if a user tries to access a restricted page or post, they will see this message instead of the content. The message can be used to explain why the content is restricted and provide instructions on how to gain access, such as by logging in or becoming a member.

Restricted Gutenberg Blocks

This setting enables the "Content Restriction" settings for Gutenberg Blocks. When enabled, it allows you to apply content restriction settings to individual Gutenberg Blocks within the WordPress editor. For a more detailed explanation of this setting, please refer to this article.

For example, you can restrict access to certain blocks within a post or page, while leaving other blocks accessible to all users. This gives you more granular control over the visibility of content within your Gutenberg Blocks. If this setting is enabled, the additional option below becomes available:

  • Restricted Access Block Message: This setting allows you to define a message that will be displayed to users who do not have permission to view a specific block's content within a post or page.

For example, if you have restricted access to a block that contains premium content, users without the necessary permissions will see this message instead of the block's content. The message can provide instructions on how to gain access, such as by logging in or upgrading their membership.

Enable the "Content Restriction" settings for post types

This setting allows you to enable the "Content Restriction" settings for specific types of content on your website, such as posts, pages, and media. By checking the post types you plan to use for "Content Restriction," you can apply access restrictions to these types of content. For a more detailed explanation of this setting, please refer to this article.

For example, if you check the "Post" and "Page" options, you can then use the "Content Restriction" settings to restrict access to individual posts and pages on your site. This gives you control over who can view different types of content on your website.

Enable the "Content Restriction" settings for taxonomies

This setting allows you to enable the "Content Restriction" settings for taxonomies such as categories and tags. By checking the taxonomies (e.g., Category, Tag), you indicate which taxonomies you want to apply the "Content Restriction" settings to. This allows you to restrict access to content based on categories or tags assigned to posts or pages. For a more detailed explanation of this setting, please refer to this article.
